Feb. 16th – The first baby hippo of 2014.
Relief has given birth to her first calf. I last saw her on January 21st without a baby then the Turgwe River came up in flood and all of the hippos moved to quieter areas. The game scouts found on the 10th February just one kilometer upstream from Hippo Haven the...

What happened during Year 2013?
2013 was a pretty harsh year for the hippos and other wildlife in our area. A localized drought, stemming from rains that fell in one large amount and then petered out, saw us without any grazing for the animals dependant on the Lowveld grasses. Browse on the trees was sufficient for elephant, kudu and giraffe but for a hippo there just was not enough food to last the year.

On WORLD ANIMAL DAY I signed a contract with Penguin publishers South Africa for my book “working title” A HIPPO LOVE STORY-TURGWE HIPPO TRUST to be published.
They expect it out by September 2014.

Squiggle – Slender mongoose written by Laura Simpson, Harmony Fund USA

June 2013 Newsletter : Urgent drought feeding appeal
Hippos. The last time I had to do this for over several months was 21 years ago.

We traveled to Hippo Haven in early October. The temperatures at this time of year can be very high and Karen does not like to expose out of shape volunteers to this type of weather, but because of my declining mobility she granted us a special gift. We had watched...
Sep. 2012 – Suzie and Doug in Zimbabwe
Doug and I have just returned from a very special trip to Zimbabwe to stay with Karen and Jean-Roger Paolillo who run the Turgwe Hippo Trust. I have been wanting to visit them and the hippos ever since Karen and I first got in touch back in 1991, but, due to one thing...
Raffle winner 2012 Teresa D’Amico New York, NY visits Turgwe Trust in July
Earlier this year I entered a raffle through the Turgwe Hippo Trust’s Facebook page, first prize being a 10-night stay at Hippo Haven located in the Save Valley Conservancy in Zimbabwe. Having already expressed an interest in volunteering there, needless to say I was thrilled when I actually won the first prize.
